Fragments, a play based the story of a couple during the AIDS crisis

Great Barrington Public Theater’s Fragments

This Summer, Great Barrington Public Theater will be kicking off their 2026 Season with the show Fragments. Written and performed by Jim Petosa, Fragments is an oral history account of Jim and his partner’s experience during the height of the Aids crisis from 1985 until 1990. Jim’s poignant story is told through 10 fragments, or episodes, from his memory of this time. Jim shares that “For many years, I shared these fragments as oral histories to friends who had the patience and the interest to hear them. Over time, each fragment developed distinct characteristics, with an attention to specific details, and a recollection of how particular phrases were spoken…This memoir exists because, as time goes by, our shared memories of the era and circumstances surrounding this journey gradually diminish. We must ensure these stories are preserved by documenting them and sharing our diverse experiences, so they are not lost.”

They will offer you (Oral History Center friends) a discount code for 15% off tickets to see Fragments.

ABOUT THE PLAY

Moments of life for one couple navigating their mystical, transformative, and harrowing journey through the AIDS pandemic. In a world where it has become more and more common for history to be eroded, rewritten or erased entirely, Jim Petosa’s new play, Fragments, is a gift. Doing what the theater does best, this piece is a memoir of a very specific time and place that shines a light on the turbulent years from 1985-90 when the world was overtaken by the eruption of the AIDS crisis.

The Oral History Center will participate in the post performance discussion, Thursday, June 25, but discounts apply to any performance.
